Gather the Stars takes place in Scotland during the aftermath of the failed Jacobite rebellion of 1745-1746. When Bonnie Prince Charlie fled following his defeat at the Battle of Culloden (near Inverness), he abandoned his supporters to fend for themselves as the British roamed the countryside slaughtering any suspected sympathizers. This is where the story begins. The heroine, Rachel, finds herself thrown into the midst of the unrest as she is kidnapped to be used as a pawn to help orphans of the slaughtered clansmen escape the country. Her captor, Gavin, is willing to go to almost any lengths to secure a future for the orphans and his friends. He is haunted mercilessly by memories of his role in the Battle of Prestonpans. Those painful recollections are what push him to do all within his power to right the wrongs of his past. The question is, can the two ever find common ground on which to stand?
On a personal note, I got this as a free ebook on Amazon, thinking it probably wouldn’t be anything special. I was very pleasantly surprised to be wrong. Not only was this a good read (I could hardly put it down), but I can honestly say I will be reading it over and over again – an unexpected favorite. I will definitely have to check out her other works!
