The Neverland Wars

The Neverland WarsThe Neverland Wars by Audrey Greathouse
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Neverland Wars is a heartwarming coming of age tale and a wonderful retelling of the Peter Pan story all rolled into one. The main character, Gwen, finds herself surrounded by a magic she had been blissfully unaware of when her sister vanishes into the night. The very next night, she finds herself whisked away on the adventure of her lifetime with none other than Peter Pan himself with her little sister in tow. But not all is rainbows and star shine in Neverland. A war is raging between the inhabitants of the magical isle and the adults in the reality to which Gwen is so eager to return. When she witnesses the war firsthand, she is pulled between a desire to stay and help and her wish to return to normal. In the end, Gwen must decide where her loyalties truly lie. After a taste of the extraordinary, can normal ever again suffice?

I would first like to state that I received this free through Netgalley for an honest review. I must confess that I have always loved the Peter Pan stories. I was not sure if this could live up to the exacting standards set forth by the original J. M. Barrie works. I am glad to say that this story did not disappoint. It was a fast-paced adventure with a little bit older and wiser Peter Pan but in no way lacking in the carefree mirth of youth. We get to see a very different Wonderland from the original tale, war does have its way of changing things. But all in all this was a fun story that I had trouble putting down. When it was over I was sitting there praying that there would be a sequel. Fans of Peter Pan should definitely give this one a chance, it is not one to be missed!
