Summoned (Summoned, #1)Summoned by Rainy Kaye
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Summoned is a modern day fantasy action/adventure written in first person. The main character, Dimitri, is a genie who must fulfill every wish his master, Karl, makes. The problem is, he treats him like his personal assassin. Reeling from the guilt of a kidnapping for his master, Dimitri meets Syd and his whole world turns upside down. What started out as a one-night stand, somehow turned into more. But as his ‘assignments’ from Karl grow in frequency, it becomes increasingly evident to him that he can never hope to have a future with her. Then the unthinkable happens and it’s a rush against time to find the answer to a question that has haunted him for as long as he can remember – can a genie ever be free?

I would first like to state that I received this free through NetGalley for an honest review. This story was nothing like I thought it would be from the synopsis. The genie was essentially human, no magic to speak of, and catered to his master’s every whim in mundane fashion. The kicker was that if he did not obey, he would be brutally tortured from inside via the genie bond. The romance in the novel was okay but seemed a bit forced really, especially at first. I couldn’t really connect with the character of Syd at all through the first half of the novel as she gave no information about her personal life and acted rather brash and obsessive at times. Things came together eventually but I would have liked a bit more foreshadowing and a bit more character development. There were numerous plot twists, tons of action, explosions, suspense, and general mayhem to keep one well entertained, however. All in all this was a good read – I tore through it at warp speed. I am curious about the next in this series, which I will be reading forthwith.
